There is no perfect number of personas.
Typically, it depends on two factors: the type of business you have, and the diversity of your ideal audience. Too many personas may lead to being pulled in too many directions with your marketing, ultimately leaving your efforts unfocused. Too few personas may result in your material being too vague to engage your prospects appropriately.
Many organizations will typically stay within a range of 3 to 5. It's important to note, however, that the number of personas doesn't matter nearly as much as the quality of each.
The best place to start is by identifying common denominators within your target audience. What problems are your users having, and how does your solution address these issues? Additional elements to consider include the verticals you serve, basic demographics, short- and long-term goals, and the interests of your clientele.
Once these components have been properly identified, you can then begin grouping them together to craft the personas that will best represent your target audience.
